I was thinking about the Carter Family when I wrote Hole in the Sky. I found out later that Black Sabbath already had a song by that name. My one regrets on the whole album is not finding a way to incorporate Tony Iommi’s guitar riff into this song. Maybe on the live version.
I worked hard all my lifetime, as long as I recall
But now I find that my hard work don’t count for nothing at all
I’m laying down my hammer I’m laying down my plow
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky and never come back down
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky and never come back down
I’ve got wife and children and the best friends in the land
I don’t care what people say I’ve been a lucky man
So fare you well my family and fare you well my friends
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky I’m never coming back again
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky and never come back again
So gather round me people listen what I say
Sing me one last song to help me on my way
I’ve got not more worries I’ve got no worries at all
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky like an angel cannonball
I’m gonna fly through a hole in the sky like an angel cannonball
Run baby run, hide baby hide
I’ve got no regrets, I’ve done the best I can
Run baby run, hide baby hide
After all is said and done I’m only just a man
Wrap your arms around me and hold me tight
Sometimes I get scared in the darkness of the night
The river is deep the water is high
I’m going over to the other side
Run baby run, hide baby hide
We only get one ticket so let’s enjoy the ride
